The project

The project “Establishing workers representation and social dialogue in the platform and app economy”, is a joint initiative of ETUC, IRES and ASTREES, funded by the European Commission. The project follows a first common event held on 23 January 2018 “Starting a dialogue on the platform economy” in Brussels.

The project started in March 2019, with a two years duration.

It aims a three specific objectives:

·         setting up and run a European Observatory for the evolution of workers participation in digital platforms,

·         identify and accompany new and innovative practices aiming to improve representation, organisation and protection of platform workers (two collective coaching sessions are planned)

·         Propose a European regulatory framework to defend [worker] representation in platforms and their working conditions in these companies.

The observatory is in charge of the following tasks :

  1. Mapping and assessing existing practices of worker representation and social dialogue within platforms;
  2. Developing new methods of representation and dialogue with the stakeholders and specifically platform workers at the European level

The specificity of the project is that it is mainly “action” oriented, the core objectives of the project being operational: identifying (10) innovative initiatives, providing them the possibility of benefiting from expertise, common sharing of experience, and tools. Moreover, the project will also benefit from the development of new “innovative” participative tools based on the decentralized W3C Solid standards developed by our subcontractor Startin’Blox.
