Just Eat Takeaway announced on 1 October that it will move to what they call a “hybrid model”, working with (bogus) self-employed riders as well as some employees.
Until now, Just Eat Takeaway was, in Belgium, the only meal-delivery platform working only with employees (directly hired and sub-contracted workers).
The union fears that the employed workers will eventually be replaced by (bogus) self-employed riders.
This is a clear example of workers being downgraded in terms of working conditions. The group JustEat-Takeaway have already done similar in Poland and Austria. As Just Eat Takeaway was in competition with other meal-delivery platforms working with (bogus) self-employed riders, the company did face unfair competition.
As a matter of fact, this so-called “hybrid” model is a strange example of workers doing the same activity with various employment status (employee and self-employed). We are curious to see how the social security administration will handle this.
